About
One of the very best courses in Thailand and an experience not to be missed
Voted Best New Course in Asia-Pacific by Asian Golf Monthly in 2009, and consistently ranking in the top 3 courses in Asia since, Pineapple Valley Golf Club Hua Hin is, appropriately enough, set in a former pineapple plantation, with local designer Pirapon Namatra making the most of the natural surroundings to create a truly breathtaking experience.
This outstanding course, which features on our list of the Best Golf Courses in Thailand, starts from an elevated tee box providing great views over the course. A par-4 dog-leg left with water preventing a direct route for all but the longest hitters, it’s best to play it safe and accept a longer approach to a green guarded by three bunkers.
After a medium-length par-3 with a small, sloping green, the par-5 3rd is a long par 5 with a fairway dotted with bunkers. It’s driveable in two with the wind at your back, although with water to the left and bunkers to the right it’s no easy feat finding the elevated green.
The 4th is a daunting par 3 with a long carry over water to an elevated green, and you should be more than happy to find any part of the large putting surface. The 5th and 6th both feature a challenging approach over water from an undulating fairway, while the very long par-4 7th shouldn’t provide too many problems if you can get a good drive from the elevated tee.
Course management is key on the 8th, with sand traps ready to capture any sliced tee shot and a cluster of bunkers in the middle of the fairway right where most approach shots would land. Even reaching the small green in regulation is no guarantee of par, with heavy contouring combining with the lightning fast Bermuda TifEagle green to offer a potent challenge.
The front nine ends with doglegging par-4 that plays uphill towards the clubhouse from an elevated tee that offers great views over the course. Finding a flat lie on the undulating Zoysia fairway is a matter more of luck than skill, so your primary aim is to find a clear line of sight to the green, with two trees with side the fairway ready to punish an errant drive with a tricky approach.
The back nine at Pineapple Valley Golf Club Hua Hin starts with the standout 10th, where a dramatic tee shot must carry shrubs and wasteland whilst avoiding woods to the left. If you can avoid the lottery of large rocks on the fairway, a tough second shot plays uphill to an elevated green which falls away awkwardly. The pair of par 5s that follow offer up a chance of a birdie, although a stream that crosses the fairway of the 11th and the multiple bunker complexes found on the 12th fairway might have something to say about that.
The short par-4 14th is particularly picturesque, a waterfall cascading into a stream that divides the fairway into two parts. Often played into the wind, you’re best off taking a driver off the tee to minimise the distance for an approach to a large green guarded by three bunkers.
Up next is the signature par-3 15th, offering up spectacular views of the ocean to your left and the mountains and valleys to your right. At just 147 yards from the back tees, you’d think this would be a birdie chance but the blustery conditions and greenside bunkers mean you should be more than content with par and a photo of the view.
Wind is again a factor on the long par-3 17th, while the final hole is a fittingly beautiful par 4 that plays towards the clubhouse with its magnificent mountain backdrop. A very large bunker running up the right of the fairway has claimed its fair share of victims, and if you can find a rare flat stance on the undulating fairway you should stand a good chance of reaching the tabletop green, where hopefully you don’t three-putt in front of the onlookers from the golfer’s terrace!
The Thai-style clubhouse features elegant locker rooms with spa-grade showers and luxury amenities, a pro shop, and two restaurants serving a variety of local and international cuisine. There’s also a pub which offers the opportunity to enjoy the view over a couple of cold beers.
While the course is walkable, the GPS-equipped carts help out enormously with club selection, although the knowledgeable caddies can also be relied upon for accurate distances and lines on the undulating greens. Extensive practice facilities are also available if you want to warm up before your round.
Overall, we have nothing but good things to say about Pineapple Valley Golf Club Hua Hin. A truly magical experience and a course that should be included on any golf holiday in Hua Hin.
Reviews
Beautiful designed facilities and well kept course.
Course is well maintained and choice of tee makes a challenge but achievable day. Had a great caddie but sadly my friend had one that spoke no English, anti social and not golf knowledgeable which really made it frustrating for him.Banyan at its best!
Course was in good condition. Greens were running well - though a big difference between up and downhill putts. Service by caddies and hospitality staff was excellent as usual. A couple of bunkers were washed out, otherwise everything else was Banyan at its best.My favourite course in Hua Hin.
Pineapple Valley (formerly Banyan) is my favourite course in Hua Hin. We played there in preparation for the Centara World Masters the following week. The course was in excellent condition. Though I had an inexperienced caddy (2 weeks experience) she was affable and tried hard. Once again the pace of the greens was baffling - my problem not the course!Course Info
