About
A first-class, cost-effective alternative to the other top courses in Hua Hin
Springfield Royal Country Club boasts an immaculately maintained 27 holes of sumptuous golf surrounded by dramatic rocky hills. Located just 30 minutes north of Hua Hin, it’s a real test, especially from the back tees, but offers great value for money, whichever of the three 9-hole courses you play.
The Mountain Course, like the Lake course designed by Jack Nicklaus, starts out innocuously enough, a short par-4 through the trees with bunkers down the left, before the par-5 2nd presents the first real test.
There’s water and sand down the left, but if you go long off the tee you can consider taking on the water carry required to reach the sloping green, which is guarded by bunkers either side. The third is a challenging long par-4 requiring a fade into the green to avoid the bunker, while a draw is the optimal play off the tee at the long par-3 4th.
The 5th is a dogleg right with a massive waste bunker running all the way up the right side of the hole, and sand features heavily on the par-3 that follows, although avoid sand and a birdie is a real possibility. A large bunker complex guards the 8th, so a long drive is required to enable you to add the backspin required to hold the green, and the Mountain Course ends with a narrow, winding par-4 where you’ll struggle to make par unless you can carry the bunkers to position A.
The original back nine at Springfield Royal Country Club, the Lake Course, seems mis-named after a pair of holes without water, but a run of five holes dominated by lakes follows.
A dog-leg right that demands fades but punishes anything sliced, the par-5 3rd can offer up a birdie if you can keep your ball out of water and sand, while the 422-yard par-4 that follows will likely yield a bogey given the very demanding approach over water required.
Two massive waste bunkers and more water line the right hand side of the 6th, another long par-4 that most will struggle to reach in regulation, while yet another dogleg right with water up the right requires a pair of accurate fades to score well.
The pick of the Lake course is probably the last, a 527-yard par-5 that first doglegs left before requiring an approach to a tricky island green. It’s a fitting end to the Nicklaus-designed part of the course.
The Valley Course at Springfield Royal Country Club, designed by Lee Schitt and opened in 2005, is even more challenging than the original 18. The long, dogleg left 3rd has water to the left and sand to the right, with only a narrow gap to run your ball onto the green, while the short par-3 that follows involves a nervy water carry off the tee, with bunkers lurking for anyone who over-clubs.
The par-5 5th has a narrow fairway, water to the right, and a very tricky approach with the pin usually set behind a pair of bunkers in front of the green, while flirting with danger is inevitable on the very long par-4 that follows, as the fairway pinches as it nears the green.
While that’s the last of the water on the Valley course, you can’t relax. The large tree that sits dead centre of the 8th fairway can nullify even the sweetest of tee shots, while the green is protected on all sides by sand traps.
The last is another long par-4 where sand is your main enemy, the two tier green protected front and back by bunkers. You’ll have to work hard to avoid ending your round with a blemish.
While none of the courses are particularly long, it's a brave soul or a masochist who plays from the black tees, so we would suggest any of the other four options from the tee which allow you to set the appropriate level of difficulty for your game.
Away from the course itself, Springfield Royal Country Club offers first class facilities; an elevated clubhouse decked out in marble and granite provides great views of the course, and we particularly enjoyed the novelty of grabbing a beer at the locker room bar, where you will find nobody complaining about the course marshal or the caddies who are by and large excellent.
Overall a round or two at Springfield Royal Country Club should be a part of any golf holiday in Hua Hin, which makes for a hugely enjoyable and cost-effective alternative to the other top courses in Hua Hin. Highly recommended.

Jack Nicklaus designed course… say no more
This course is very long, lots of water and loads of sand traps. Hard course but very enjoyable. We played off white tees and no1 index par 4 is 451 yds!Course in good condition. Great service
Course in good condition. Greens tricky to judge. Caddies advice was usual spot on, however. First cut of rough just off the fairways was manageable. The course was in good condition, and the service of both caddies (Nuk and Et) was excellent.
We played the A and B courses in preparation for the World Masters the following week. The course was in good condition, and the greens were tricky to read.Course Info
