About

One of the best courses on earth, let alone in Asia, a round here should be on every golfer's bucket list

Black Mountain Golf Club features 27-holes of breathtaking, championship-standard golf and regularly ranks as one of the top 100 courses in the world. The host of multiple Asian PGA events, the course is set amidst stunning mountains, natural creeks and contours carved by nature; it’s a beautiful setting for a really challenging game of golf.

While Black Mountain Golf Club was designed to test professional players in mind, five tee boxes mean the challenge can be tailored to players of all abilities. The impeccably-maintained Seashore Paspalum fairways are actually more generous for the shorter drive, tending to narrow further down where Tiger would be landing his ball.

When it comes to the blind holes and severe dog-legs however, you might find yourself paying for an overly conservative approach off the tee. The greens are comfortably large but generally well protected by water and superbly sculpted bunkers.

The East Course

All three nines (the original East and North Courses were supplemented by a third nine, the West Course, in 2016) feature some truly memorable holes. At the par-5 2nd on the East Course, water threatens three times, with a drive over a waterway, a lake intruding into the fairway, and another water carry on approach into a green guarded by two massive sand traps.

The 4th hole on the East Course features a nervy approach to a beautiful island green where the pin is often tucked behind a greenside bunker. At the long par-5 6th, the John Dalys of this world can cut the water and reach the peninsula green in two, whilst we mere mortals have to thread our way around the narrow, doglegging fairway. Either way, it’s a breathless experience.

Scoring well on the par-4 7th involves avoid water down both sides of the fairway and hoping you don’t get snared the two monstrously large greenside bunkers ever seen, while finding the lightning fast Bermuda TifEagle green at the short par-3 8th from the tee is no guarantee of a par thanks to the subtle breaks that can catch out even the most accomplished of players.

The North Course

The original back nine, the North Course, is no less intoxicating. After kicking off with a short par-4 with a challenging approach over water and sand, and a picture-perfect par-3 with a semi-island green, the deceptively tricky par-4 3rd is where a lot of scorecards start to unravel. With water to the left and multiple sand traps to the right, it takes two mighty, accurate blows to reach the green in regulation.

The par-3 5th involves a water carry to an unusually-shaped green protected by three massive bunkers. Even if you can find the putting surface, you may not have a direct line to the flag.

The challenges keep coming thick and fast. A large rock in the middle of the 6th fairway of the North Course can punish even the most impeccable drive, and a pulled approach to the green at the 7th can leave you between two more massive rocks and faced with no good options.

The 8th looks like a driveable par-4 but in reality taking on the water carry is likely a fool’s errand, while the last hole of the original 18 is a long, uphill par 5 with a green guarded by another of Black Mountain’s signature massive bunkers.

The West Course

The recently added West Course is a worthy addition to the original layout, with water in play on every hole and a plethora of bunkers ready to punish anything off line. Whichever layout you decide to play, you’re in for something special at a course that more than deserves its place on our list of the Best Golf Courses in Asia

The Facilities

The clubhouse is exceptional, providing panoramic views of the whole course, fine dining at the well-regarded restaurant, and Hua Hin’s most extensively stocked pro shop. The locker rooms are first class, and there’s also an on-site spa and extensive practice facilities.

Conclusion

While the green fees at Black Mountain Golf Club are higher than other Hua Hin golf courses, they are more than justified given a round here is an experience that will live long in the memory.

One of the best courses in Asia

Spectacular course with excellent greens and layout, proper championship standard. Only negative was we paid for 27 holes and only told on the day that the East course was closed and we had to play the same 9 again.

Very pleasant day at Black mountain.

Very nice, challenging course. Great caddies and service all around. Little slow pace on the course, but overall a very nice experience.
