Royal Hua Hin Golf Course
About
An enjoyably scenic round of golf awaits at the grand old lady of Thai golf
Originally opened in 1924 to entertain the Scottish engineers helping build the Thai railway system, Royal Hua Hin Golf Course is the grand old lady of Thai golf and the oldest course in Thailand. Conveniently located between rocky hills just 5 minutes from downtown Hua Hin, the course is indicative of traditional British golf design in its length and difficulty.
Due to its long history, the course is lined with fully mature trees which gives the course a character not often found in Thailand. Since irrigation wasn’t taken quite as seriously in the 1920s, the fairways are usually pretty hard and often interspersed with weeds and bald patches.
On the plus side, you’ll find your drives running on longer than they usually would, unless you’re playing in the rainy season when you might encounter mud. The greens are very slow but run true and can be tough to read.
Some of the more elevated holes provide spectacular views of the Gulf and the city centre, and an impressive Thai temple forms the backdrop to the tricky par-3 14th. Best of all, the old Hua Hin Bangkok - Singapore railway station which sits next to the recently upgraded clubhouse creates a majestic feel to the club.
The standout hole is probably the 9th, a par-4 running downhill towards the clubhouse which requires a lengthy drive in order to carry the wasteland in front of the tee; you can go over or between the two massive bushes that stand in your way. You're best off keeping to the right as that will offer you the optimal route into a green protected by bunkers and trees.
The remodelled clubhouse is a definite improvement on what went before, but it’s by no means a five-star affair. Nonetheless, it’s a pleasant place for some Thai food and a post-round beer. There’s a driving range and practice green for those looking to tune up their game before a round, and the small pro shop offers all the basics.
While the condition of the course will bug some people, if you can ignore that then Royal Hua Hin Golf Course is a pleasurable, scenic course that requires a well developed all-round game in order to score well. Worth playing at least once on any Hua Hin golf holiday.

Efficient service but a bit below what we could say thai service
Quite challenging buy you can see it has had better times. Still I will probably play it again sometime. The only reason to play at Royal is it's the oldest course in Thailand
The overall condition is frankly not great and that’s a real pity. Hopefully the management will get its act together and give the course a new life which is badly needed.Quick round with great caddies
The course needs some improvement, but it is always a charming experience to play this historic courseCourse Info
