Silky Oak Country Club

A really good value and undemanding layout

Silky Oak Country Club, 17th hole

Situated a short 40-minute drive away from Pattaya, you will find Silky Oak Country Club.  Created by a local designer and opened for play in 2010, Silky Oak Country Club is in the same location as two other well-known golf courses in the region, St Andrews 2000 Golf Club and the Rayong Green Valley Country Club.  The course is named after the tree which can be found in high numbers during a round at Silky Oak and despite having 18-holes like a traditional par-72 golf course, there are only nine fairways.  As you would expect from shared fairways, they are very wide to accommodate golfers playing in two directions and the greens are also large.  However, the land can be quite undulating at times and good shot control is required to hit a low score.  There are lovely views of the surrounding hills to enjoy when playing at Silky Oak and it’s worth stopping at the half-way house, where the views are quite spectacular.  The clubhouse is nice but it’s the golf course which steals the limelight and Silky Oak Country Club is one of the best value golf courses in Pattaya.

Greenwood Golf and Resort

Greenwood Golf and Resort was established in 1993 and the course was designed by Peter Thompson

Greenwood Golf and Resort

Slightly further afield than Silky Oak, is Greenwood Golf and Resort.  A 70-minute drive from Pattaya, Greenwood Golf and Resort was established in 1993 and the course was designed by Peter Thompson, the five-time British Open champion.  The course makes great use of the local flora and fauna and features 27-holes, playing to a par-72 at 7,015 yards.  Water hazards are at a minimum on this golf courses but beware the sand traps, pot bunkers and lemon grass, the latter two of which can be extremely difficult to escape from.  The three lots of nine holes require strategic shot placement, with accurate driving and good club selection.  With plenty of undulating terrain long several of the fairways, you can be forgiven for thinking you are playing a traditional British links course at times.  The Chonburi hills provide the perfect backdrop to a round of golf at Greenwood Golf and Resort and although the course requires a drive of over an hour to reach, the fact it is one of the best value golf courses in Pattaya, makes the extra effort to reach it worthwhile.  You will find many local golfers playing this course, which is testament to the great value it provides.

Eastern Star Country Club and Resort

Eastern Star Country Club and Resort is a Trent Jones Jr. designed, links style golf course

Eastern Star Country Club and Resort

Moving a little closer to the city and easily one of the best value course in Pattaya, Eastern Star Country Club and Resort is a Trent Jones Jr. designed, links style golf course.  Situated on the road to Bangchang, it’s immediately noticeable how much cooler this golf course feels than many others in the region and that’s due to its location on the coast.  Eastern Star Country Club and Resort is just 2 kilometres away from the sea and this results in cooling breezes across the course.  Being close to sea level, the course works its way through the residential area of the resort and in true links fashion, has many undulations on both the fairways and the greens.  With 65 bunkers and 11 lakes, Eastern Star Country Club and Resort is the home to local and regional golf tournaments but despite its status in this area of Thailand, it remains a great value course to play.  Well-positioned shots and a sound strategy are required to score low on this course, with deep rough punishing those who lose their line.  However, the nice open fairways are welcoming for beginners and advanced players alike and the additional facilities, such as the Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts and restaurant make Eastern Star Country Club and Resort a lovely place to play golf.

Mountain Shadow Golf Club

A delightful golf course, designed by Ronald Fream

Mountain Shadow Golf Club

Roughly the same distance from Pattaya city centre as Eastern Star Country Club and Resort, you will find another one of the best value golf courses in Pattaya.  Mountain Shadow Golf Club, formerly known as Natural Park Hill Golf Club, re-opened in 2004 having undergone a complete renovation.  The result of the renovation?  A delightful golf course, designed by Ronald Fream.  The 18 holes are framed nicely by flowers and trees and there are four island greens to enjoy and test the accuracy of your approach shots.  The greens are quick and have many undulations, so take note of the pin position and play your shots accordingly, to give yourself the best chance of making birdies or saving par.  The tree-lined fairways mean anything not on the fairway could result in a difficult recovery shot but you cannot afford to play safe because the distances from the tee to the fairway can be quite long.  Mountain Shadow Golf Club is certainly a challenging golf course but one which is very pleasant to the eye and makes for a lovely day of golf.

Pattavia Century Golf Club

The rolling hills and pleasant countryside make for a lovely golf course

Pattavia Century Golf Club

Similarly, to Mountain Shadow Golf Club, Pattavia Century Golf Club has been the subject of a recent renovation and thus, is one of the modern golf clubs in the Pattaya region.  During the 2014 renovation, the course was lengthened and now plays to 7,100 yards from the back tees.  The rolling hills and pleasant countryside make for a lovely golf course, which winds its way through jungle and ravines.  Expect to be tested by numerous doglegs and although this is not one of the more famous golf courses in the area, Pattavia Century Golf Club is one of the best value golf courses in Pattaya.

Parichat International Golf Links

Not for the high handicappers as locals rate this as one of the most difficult

Parichat International Golf Links

Only 30 minutes from Pattaya, Parichat International Golf Links is well worth the short journey from the city.  The course is somewhat shorter than many of its neighbours at 6,600 yards but with water coming into play on a regular basis, including around the greens, do not let the length deceive you into thinking this will be an easy round of golf.  In fact, there are several holes which even the most skilled golfer will have trouble in making par and the cliffs which frame many of them, can come into play if you are not accurate enough with your approach play.  If you are looking for a good value round of golf while staying in Pattaya, Parichat International Golf Links is worth a visit.

Khao Kheow Country Club

Finally and possibly the best value golf course in Pattaya, is Khao Kheow Country Club

 Khao Kheow Country Club

Finally and possibly the best value golf course in Pattaya, is Khao Kheow Country Club.  The course is set in a valley and with changes in elevation throughout, you will need to be on your game to score low.  There are 27 holes in total, with 18 of them making a par-72 championship golf course and the remaining 9 holes playing more like a resort style course.  The key to making a good score at Khao Kheow Country Club, is putting.  The greens are very undulating and good approach play, followed by excellent reading of the greens is required to pick up birdies on this course.  The maintenance of the course is excellent and great attention to detail is given to keeping the greens in immaculate condition throughout the year.  Look out for the par-3, 17th hole which is reminiscent of the famous island hole at TPC Sawgrass.  In terms of value for money, Khao Kheow Country Club is very difficult to beat and comes highly recommended when enjoying a golf holiday in Pattaya.

Pattaya is a great place to stay for a golf holiday.  There are numerous, excellent golf courses situated around the city, many of which can easily be reached within a 1 hour drive.  The best value golf courses in Pattaya are also some of the best in terms of quality and overall playing experience.  You do not have to pay over the odds for a fantastic and memorable golfing experience when staying in Pattaya.
